We will all have highs and lows, mountain tops and valleys in our lives, but it is important to remember who is with you every step of the way. When looking back at old journals I have, where I’ve written out my triumphs and struggles, I get to see how God WAS and IS continually working in me.

There are many places in the Bible where it talks about remembering God, one of them is from the great leader Moses. As Moses gave his last speech to the Israelites he stressed the importance of remembering God, “When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Deuteronomy 6:10-12). Moses knew that the Israelites would be tempted to drift from God and once they became comfortable in their new land, they would forget God. He reminds them of the greatness of God and how God is the one who is bringing them into this new land.

Drifting from God and forgetting His greatness in our lives, is something that happens to all of us. But what is important, when we begin to forget God’s greatness, is to reconnect and remember those times that God was with us. To look back and see the times when we were struggling and how He was with us every step of the way, can help give us confidence in God and help strengthen our faith.

When I was in 3rd grade, my dad became really sick to the point of him being in the hospital. Thankfully, he was able to recover and is a very healthy and happy person today. I often am able to look back at that time and other times in my life when my family had to lean on God. I am able to see how God took a broken situation and worked it into something good. Even when we feel stuck or hopeless in a situation now and when we don’t feel like God is with us, we can remember that God has moved mountains in our lives before and He will continue to move them today.

One way that has helped me to keep track of the good times and rough patches in my life and how I’ve seen God work is to write down in a journal the ups and downs I’ve had. Looking back at these journal entries helps me to see how far I’ve come and where God was able to take the problem I had and resolve it. When you have the time, I hope that you can create a reflection page or a timeline in your journal of where you have seen God move in your life. You can even begin today to write little entries of struggles you have and little joys you find in your day, so that later on you are able to reflect and see how God has transformed your life.
